Rhinoplasty
entDescription
Rhinoplasty is surgical reshaping of the nose for cosmetic improvement or to correct breathing problems (functional rhinoplasty/septoplasty). It can address a wide range of concerns including dorsal hump, wide or narrow bridge, bulbous tip, asymmetry, and deviated septum. Techniques include open rhinoplasty (external incision for complex cases) and closed rhinoplasty (internal incisions for simpler modifications). Ultrasonic rhinoplasty (piezoelectric) allows precise bone reshaping with less bruising. Computer imaging helps surgeons and patients agree on expected outcomes. Revision rhinoplasty addresses unsatisfactory results from prior surgery. Results are both cosmetic and functional, with high patient satisfaction rates at experienced centers.
What to Expect
Surgery takes 1-3 hours under general anesthesia. Most patients go home the same day or after one night. Internal splints or packing may be placed for 1-2 days. An external nasal splint is worn for 1 week. Bruising around the eyes is common for 7-10 days. Cold compresses and head elevation help minimize swelling. Your surgeon may use computer imaging to preview expected results before surgery.
Recovery Information
Week 1: Splint removal, significant swelling and bruising. Avoid blowing nose. Weeks 2-3: Most bruising resolves, return to desk work. Week 3-4: Light exercise may resume. Months 1-3: Major swelling subsides, nose begins to take final shape. Months 3-6: Continued subtle refinement. Months 6-18: Final results visible as tip swelling fully resolves. Avoid contact sports for 3 months. Protect nose from sun exposure for 6 months. Full results take 12-18 months to appreciate.
