Gastric Sleeve Surgery

digestive

Description

Gastric sleeve surgery (laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) removes approximately 80% of the stomach, creating a narrow tube or sleeve shape. This reduces stomach capacity from about 1 liter to 100-150ml and removes the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin (the hunger hormone). It is indicated for patients with BMI over 40, or BMI over 35 with obesity-related conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. The gastric sleeve is now the most commonly performed bariatric procedure worldwide. Expected excess weight loss is 60-70% over 12-18 months. Many patients see significant improvement or resolution of type 2 diabetes, often before significant weight loss occurs.

What to Expect

Laparoscopic surgery takes 1-2 hours through 4-5 small incisions. Hospital stay is 1-3 days. A liquid diet is required for 2-4 weeks before transitioning to pureed foods. Clear liquids begin on the day of surgery. A leak test may be performed before starting oral intake. Pain is managed with medications and early walking is encouraged to prevent blood clots. Pre-operative weight loss of 5-10% may be required.

Recovery Information

Weeks 1-2: Liquid diet only, gradual increase in walking. Weeks 2-4: Transition to pureed foods, return to light work. Months 1-2: Soft foods introduced, most patients return to regular work. Months 2-3: Transition to regular healthy diet in small portions. Weight loss is rapid in the first 6 months, continuing for 12-18 months. Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation (B12, iron, calcium, multivitamin) is mandatory. Regular follow-up with dietitian and bariatric team for the first 2 years, then annually.
